Miner safety is our top priority

JSW is rapidly deploying globally unique solutions intended to enhance the safety of miners. Development of a modern, harmonised system for wireless communications and the highest-quality employee monitoring at all of JSW’s mines, increase in the level of training for mine emergency rescue personnel, formation of JSW’s next-gen Central Emergency Warehouse and changes in the work system for mine rescue staff. These are just the key recommendations from two teams formed by JSW’s CEO, Daniel Ozon, after the disaster at Ruch Zofiówka in May. The Management Board received reports from both of the teams and announced that they will be promptly implemented.

Risk to health and life is an inherent part of mining. However, we are certain that plentiful threats do not have to translate into accidents as long as the occupational health and safety area is managed in a reliable and systematised way. This is why safety and health protection at JSW are considered equally as important as production levels and financial results. Our objective is clear – to reduce the number of dangerous incidents and entirely eliminate fatal accidents.

Objectives within our Strategy include:

  • maintenance of certified PN-N-18001 management systems for: coal extraction, processing and sales
  • involvement of employees in improving the occupational health and safety management system, including development of solutions intended for specific jobs
  • maintenance of high quality of occupational health and safety training, with special emphasis on the discussed issues being up to date and practical
  • continuous development and modification of resources at the online training and information platform „Foreman’s Section and more” in order to expand employees’ knowledge and awareness in the occupational health and safety domain

In hard coal mines, due to the specific mining conditions, workers are exposed to harmful and arduous conditions in the workplace. The most frequent occupational disease among current and former workers at JSW’s mines is pneumoconiosis. Other diseases such as occupational hearing damage, chronic musculoskeletal system diseases, vibration white finger have been eliminated or reduced to incidental occurrences.

An extended scope of preventive medical check-ups is in effect at JSW’s mines, which covers mandatory additional check-ups concerning prevention of cardiovascular diseases for all in-house employees and the employees of companies providing services at JSW’s mining facilities.

Innovations for safety

Following the unfortunate accidents in 2018, the Group is implementing globally unique solutions intended to enhance the safety of miners. These mainly include: development of a modern, harmonised system for wireless communications and the highest-quality employee monitoring at all of JSW’s mines, increase in the level of training for mine emergency rescue personnel, formation of JSW’s next-gen Central Emergency Warehouse and changes in the work system for mine rescue staff.
