JSW Group is very strongly embedded in the region in which it operates. Hard coal mining has been and continues to be a part of the Upper Silesia region’s culture, with plenty of local traditions and customs. Our recruitment needs have an impact on the directions of vocational and university education. Our activities and the condition of our business also have an impact on local well-being. Firms from and around the mining industry are a key employer and a major payer of taxes and other fees related to concessions and deposit exploitation. These funds go to local government budgets, facilitating development and investments.
In 2018, JSW paid PLN 1 327 579.4 in public-law fees to the budget.
We are a partner and sponsor of local initiatives and projects, sports and education. We believe that respect for the society has a great meaning for our further success. This is why we are so serious about dialogue, organising meetings with the Management Board for municipal governments, participating in working teams under the auspices of the Director of the Regional Mining Office in Gliwice and cooperating with local government in the education area.
We monitor the needs and signals coming from local communities, which for example has led to a reduction in payment deadlines for cash compensation for mining damages for natural persons to 30 days. This initiative was very well received by the residents of regions where we conduct mining activities.
The negative effects of mining activity can be substantially reduced but they cannot be eliminated entirely. We want to be a good neighbour to the local communities, acting and investing in such a way as to ensure that the benefits coming from JSW for the regions not only compensate for but also significantly outweigh the related inconveniences.
JSW gets involved in life of the local communities in which it operates. We help in solving problems that are of importance to these communities, for example by supporting healthcare units, children and youth, interesting initiatives in areas such as education, health, ecology, culture and sport.
JSW Group companies also intensively work for their surroundings and communities by organising charity campaigns, combating poverty, supporting young talents, promoting sports as an important domain of social life, as well as by organising internships and training for kids and youth.
The total value of donations made by JSW Group in 2018 was PLN 3 940 500.
Guided by the notion that aid should be directed to where it is needed the most, we have provided special support for children from the Jastrzębie-based orphanage. Thanks to JSW’s support, the kids participated in educational and entertainment trips to various locations in Poland. In June, they visited the headquarters of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa, where they had an opportunity to become the company’s top executives, sit in their chairs and hold short meetings with employees. Another attraction within the project was a graffiti workshop organised with NIETAK, a company specialising in painting artistic murals. The effects of work by kids and their caretakers were displayed in front of the company’s headquarters. The JSW for Kids project in 2018 ended with the development of a unique calendar featuring kids, prepared in cooperation with the Jastrzębie Photography Club „Niezależni.”
In December 2018, Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa officially formed the JSW Foundation, which will cooperate with local governments and support local initiatives. JSW’s Management Board decided to establish this organisation to strengthen JSW Group’s image as a socially responsible and locally involved company. The Foundation’s tasks include support for local governments, especially in locations where Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa operates. It will serve as a tool for JSW to transparently build relations with municipalities as regards financial support for various initiatives being implemented by local governments. The JSW Foundation’s Council has 11 members, and its chairperson is Daniel Ozon, President of the Management Board of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa. The Foundation’s Management Board has five members. Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa is the founder.
On Kids’ Day, Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa provided professional 3D printers to schools. The devices were given to five schools, with which the company has been cooperating for years – from Knurów, Ornontowice, Gdańsk and two from Jastrzębie-Zdrój. These cutting-edge 3D printers from Poland-based SKRIWARE can be used to print multi-dimensional spatial models. They teach creativity, entrepreneurship and modern technology. Kids and youth can now develop interdisciplinary skills in a process of designing, building and programming robots.
This is a unique project encompassing a variety of activities addressing kids and youth and, in the future, adults. Its main concept is education, mainly in exact sciences, widely-defined ecology and more. The Knowledge of Mine instructors want to instil in children passion for exploring the world, experiencing and discovering. The project is intended to support the development of talents and provide equal access to modern and interesting forms of extracurricular activity.
