Forest Carbon Farms (FCF) is a pioneer effort carried out by the Polish State Forests that aims to increase the quantity of carbon dioxide absorbed by forest ecosystems and at the same time curtail the emissions of this gas in wetlands. Forests are natural absorbers of CO2, a gas that is responsible for a major part of the greenhouse effect.
Forest Carbon Farms may become a tool in pursuing climate policy that does not limit the possibilities of economic development. Many companies and institutions took part in the auction and they included: KGHM Polska Miedź, Budimex, Energa, PKN ORLEN, PGNiG and the LOTOS Group. The Polish State Forests will earmark all of the proceeds from this auction to the objectives designated by the various buyers related to executing nature protection initiatives.
Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa purchased ten thousand units for one hundred thousand Polish zloty.
Under the project in which the Company intends to participate, namely in the bison nature reserve, educational signs to give directions and warnings will be made, an educational tunnel will be built and a carport will be adapted for use as a forest school. The project budget exceeds half a million Polish zloty. “We are elated that Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa will be able to participate in this pioneer effort; its financial support will contribute to enhancing the quality of the natural environment where we live while making it possible to back local nature protection initiatives”, said Jerzy Majchrzak, Director of the Environmental Protection and Mining Damages Department at Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa who received the certificate of purchase of the Carbon Dioxide Units during the opening ceromony of the POL-ECO System Fair in Poznań.
Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa is an environmentally friendly company that espouses the principles of corporate social responsibility. It is eager to support any and all ecological initiatives and it undertakes a variety of actions involving the conservation of natural resources. For that reason, the Carbon Dioxide Units auction held to provide support to local initiatives perfectly dovetails with JSW’s corporate social responsibility policy.
