JSW is the main partner of the 2018 Raw Materials Congress

Continuous access to appropriate quantities of mineral resources of desirable quality is an important factor ensuring Poland’s sustainable growth. This is the main conclusion of the Raw Materials Congress held from 20 to 23 November in Rytro. The conference was organized by the Mineral and Energy Economy Research Institute at the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Geological Institute in Rytro.

The congress is a summary of the broad consultation process for the proposed State Raw Materials Policy, which will define effective tools and activities aimed at securing the supply of raw materials necessary for the development of Poland’s economy. Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa as the largest producer of coking coal in the European Union, had to be present in this important place where such important subjects are raised. - The struggle is to ensure resources for the future. We must remember that, without them, Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa cannot exist. It is increasingly difficult to obtain concessions and environmental decisions, which is why we need to better recognize our deposits. Already during the preparation of the new strategy of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa till 2030 and beyond until 2050, a review of resources, especially prospective deposits, was carried out. Our analysis has shown that we would have to begin dynamically opening prospective deposits for all our mines – Artur Dyczko, Vice-President of the JSW Management Board on strategy and development, said during the Congress.

From the point of view of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa, the State Raw Materials Policy is a document necessary for the appropriate development of the mining sector, which, together with other documents such as the Responsible Development Strategy and the Poland’s Energy Policy, will constitute a study of strategic importance for Poland. - For JSW, the resource base was, is and will be the most important. The company is to mine coking coal and produce coke – these are our priorities. For the mining operations to be efficient, we need to change our approach to production planning; therefore, next year we will have deposit models for all our mines, and after 2020 we will present a strategy based on this system, with a strong emphasis on quality and mining scenarios, depending on the market price of coal and its quality parameters – Artur Dyczko emphasized during the Congress. - Today, it is the largest project of this type in the world. No-one in history has ever implemented such a complex IT system in six mines simultaneously – this is a real change. Soon, all of our geological and measurement documentation, both archival and future, will be digital. This is why we are building the new system, forming teams and training people.

According to the JSW Management Board, efficient operation of the deposit recognition system is the only thing that can ensure safety of mining operations for many years to come. Artur Dyczko, Vice-President of JSW, believes that the foundation of the new production planning system in the Company includes recognition, planning and only then mining. This is the basis for implementing the JSW’s strategy until 2030. It focuses on expanding the company’s resource base and on ensuring effective management of the entire resource and environmental area.

The 2018 Raw Materials Congress, for which Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa is the main partner, is held under the honorary patronage of the Minister of Energy, Minister of the Environment and the Chief Geologist of Poland. It covers a broad range of topics related to geology, mining, law, economics, environmental and social issues related to the management of mining resources. Keynote speakers included experts from domestic and international scientific research institutions.
