Wall XV was to be started much earlier, in February this year. Unfortunately, this became impossible because of a fire in the adjacent wall XIV, which took place in February, over a two-week standstill period associated with the strike in the whole JSW. The range of fire danger was so great that the mine lost not only wall XIV, but also the nearby wall XV already prepared for the operation.
After the strike, JSW had to adapt its technical - economic plan, because it was clear that the mine Knurów-Szczyglowice would not be able to fulfill its tasks. It should be noted that the mine has one of the lowest production costs among the JSW mines.
- Due to intensive preventive work, the enormous commitment of crews and favorable natural conditions, it was possible to control this hazard in the region, eliminate the fire field and create a safe environment for the extraction of coal from the walls. The fight against the risk of fire in underground mine workings is extremely difficult, so the quick return to safe mining conditions should be considered a success - praises the mine Jerzy Borecki, vice president of JSW for technical matters.
After the start – up of the wall XV and regaining full production capacity, the mine has every reason to realize - despite previous difficulties - mining plan for 2015, just like the rest of JSW. Currently, the production is conducted from five walls.
