„Bzie-Dębina 2-West” deposit made available

High quality coking coal deposits.

It has been four years since JSW received license for production of coal and methane, as the accompanying mineral from "Bzie Dębina 2 - West" deposit and now miners managed to make access to seams of good coking properties . It is estimated that the deposit consists of 322 million tons of such coal. The first ton will be mined in 2017.

The drift mining works were started on the level of 900 meters from the  Zofiówka Site to connect it to the 1 Bzie shaft at 1110 meters. So far the 1950 meters long belt incline has been made, parallel incline 2008 meters long and 225 meters of the main drift of 1,110 m, which is the first available coal seams in the deposit "Bzie Dębina 2 - West".

Seams 403/2 and 403/1 of thickness from 1.1 to 1.70 and 1.56 have good coking properties and confirm optimistic forecasts about the coal quality of "Bzie-Debina" deposit.

However, before coal seams were made accessible, miners had to deal with regional fault "Bzie-Czechowice" of about  800 meters. With regard to the surface the fault runs from Kęty area in the east through Czechowice-Dziedzice, Jastrzębie-Zdrój and further to the west to the Czech Republic border.

We are the first mine in Poland, which tunneled the area - said Dariusz Janik, head of surveying-geological department of  Borynia-Zofiówka-Jastrzębie colliery. - Before workings in the fault I tried to get some information on this topic. Unfortunately, there is no literature on "Bzie - Czechowice" fault. We are the pioneers - Dariusz Janik adds.

The throw of a fault is 130 meters wide. Rock mass across the width of the fault was unstable, shattered,  weak and prone to falling off.
- Cutting required appropriate drilling  technology along with using the consolidation of the rock mass, double mechanical support  and systematic strengthening of roof rocks. In order to maintain long-term stability, reducing floor uplift and moving sidewalls  inverts were placed. What is more, in order to slow down the corrosion process spray concrete coating is to be applied. – engineer Janik explains.

Further planned mining works are about providing access to the main drift for the next ruda coal seams 401, 402/1, 402/2, 402/3, of thickness from 1.4 to 2.6 m. These works will help to identify the structure, mode of deposition and the quality of the deposit. Diagnosis of mining and geological conditions will affect the uptake of documented resource base, the ability to conduct economically and technically safe coal extraction. After the excavation of about 760 meters at the 1110 and sinking approximately 800 meters of the 1 Bzie shaft ventilation connection will be made.

The concession for the extraction of coal and methane as the accompanying mineral from "Dębina Bzie-2-West" deposit ,was granted to JSW in December 1, 2008 and is valid until the end of 2042. The deposit has an area of 10.36 km2 and is located within the administrative boundaries of Jastrzębie-Zdrój. In "Debina Bzie-2-West" deposit  within the categories C1 and C2 to the level of 1300 meters 322 million tons of coking coal are documented, within this amount to the south of Bzie-Czechowice fault approximately 227 million tons. It should also be noted that the work carried out in the future will allow access to and development of adjacent deposits "Bzie Dębina 1-West", which balance resources are estimated at 400 million tons.
