Rescuers still looking for their colleague

The rescue operation at the Krupiński coal mine, where a methane-ignition incident occurred on Thursday, 5 May, is still under way.

Teams of mine rescuers are continuing their search for their colleague, a 34-year-old rescuer, who got lost during the rescue operation. The rescuers are combing the drift where the methane ignition incident occurred.

Nitrogen is still being pumped underground in the area of the search in order to keep non-explosive atmosphere to prevent methane explosion. At the same time, work is under way to reduce the amount of smoke and temperature in the area by gradually lengthening one of the air ducts.

Nine teams of rescuers are involved in the rescue operation on each shift.

As a result of the Thursday accident, 11 people were taken to hospital. Nine mines with the most serious injuries are being treated at the Centre for Burn Treatment in Siemianowice Śląskie. Two other mines have already been discharged from Provincial Specialist Hospital No. 2 in Jastrzębie-Zdrój. The physicians at the Centre for Burn Treatment in Siemianowice Śląskie say that the lives of their miners are not in danger and the condition of each of them is stable. The men are conscious, mentally responsive, and their respiratory and circulatory functions are stable.
