We are going back to coking coal

The plan for the next two years? Rebuilding coking coal output of the coal type 35 to reach 10 million tons production capacity. It is this coal that has the largest sales and gets the highest price. The coming two years for the company is – as it was defined by the new head of JSW – „a to be or not to be”.

We go back to what was the essence of  JSW functioning  -  thanks to which the company has a chance to survive. I am thinking here of good quality hard coal type 35, - said Edward Szlęk, CEO of JSW during the first meeting with journalists held in the company's headquarters on April 29, 2015. - Within two years we want to rebuild the level of coal production up to 10 million tonnes with those investment projects that JSW currently leads. I'm talking about investments in the field Bzie Dębina, of reaching the 35 coal  type  in  Knurów-Szczyglowice and Budryk. That will be the main directions of our activities - added the CEO of JSW indicating that the company may be looking for external partners to carry out these investments.

- President of JSW pointed out that in Europe, consuming  50-60 million tonnes of coking coal annually, there is room for production from JSW mines , however to defend its position, the company,  must keep an eye on the cost regime. According to the CEO increasing work efficiency which in JSW is over 600 tonnes per worker per year is crucial. He also said that with the growing demands of consumers coke quality requirements are increasing too.

Edward Szlęk pointed to the employment reduction, as part of a reduction in fixed costs, but  emphasized that there is no issue of any anti-social activities. - We employ 25 thousand people, 1500 people leave the company every year for natural reasons. Apart from admissions to technological  positions that directly translate into levels of production, we will not hire new people. As a result, in a prosocial way, painless for employees, we reduce the level of employment - said the CEO of JSW.

The new president announced that the first meeting with the unions will take place on Thursday.  He stressed that, the Act on Trade Unions is the law in Poland and therefore it has to be respected. - It is hard to imagine the functioning of such a large company without contact with the trade unions - said Edward Szlęk. - The unions signed an agreement through which the crew gave up a large part of their earnings.  I appreciate it very much, because it means they understand the gravity of the situation. I assume that such understanding will also be granted  for processes which I plan to introduce. I would like to assure that it will be done in a prosocial way, without losses for workers and the local community - he added.
