Methane conference

A two-day workshop on best practices for monitoring, capturing and using methane in coal mines was held in Katowice. Among the speakers was Artur Badylak, Director of the Methane Drainage and Management Department at JSW.

The conference was organized by the United Nations Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane and a Just Transition, while the conference was co-organized by the International Center of Excellence for Coal Mine Methane in Poland (ICE-CMM Poland), of which Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa is a member. During the meeting, a number of topics were discussed, including the provisions of the EU Methane Regulation and the challenges its implementation may pose for EU member states, including the Polish mining industry.

- I am glad that we were able to organize such a conference in Poland. This is an opportunity to exchange experiences and gain knowledge of regulatory solutions that work around the world. Perhaps this meeting will bring us inspiration and point to courses of action we could adopt, especially when it comes to specific financial tools to support mining in reducing methane emissions. We know that in the United States such extensive subsidy programs are already in place. It is important that the industry not be left alone. It is necessary to create conditions that will allow companies to meet regulatory requirements and develop in a sustainable manner - stresses Artur Badylak, Director of the Methane Drainage and Management Department at JSW, who is also chairman of the presidium of ICE-CMM Poland.

Unlike other greenhouse gases, methane can be converted into usable energy. Capturing and using methane makes it possible to generate clean energy and mitigate global climate change. Appropriate technologies are available in every sector, including mining. In this context, the Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane and Just Transition at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe ("UNECE") has been working for decades to help countries and the coal industry effectively monitor, capture and utilize methane. In this area, Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa has much to boast about. 20 conference participants from Italy, China, Japan and the United States came to visit the Budryk mine. At shaft VI located in Chudów, they had the opportunity to see the methane drainage station and cogeneration systems.
