“We came to the conclusion that sandbags may be effective, but we are living in the twenty-first century, and we started thinking about a more mature and universal solution, so that the flood barrier could be easily assembled and dismantled,” explains Jarosław Zagórowski, director of the Central Mining Institute.

Designed by Przedsiębiorstwo Budowy Szybów in Tarnowskie Góry, the Mobile Flood Protection structure consists of poles mounted on a permanent foundation and horizontal barrier beams stacked one on top of the other between the poles.

The use of such installations would complement the long-term implementation of systemic solutions for improving retention will allow the creation of safer urban and suburban areas more resilient to the effects of climate change.

“We want to use our potential outside the mining market as well. Hence the participation of our professionals in the design phase. There is a huge construction and overhaul department within the company. We process several thousand tons of steel annually for various types of structures, so we certainly have a lot of experience in this area," assured Mariusz Nonna-Bachoń, vice-president of the management board for strategy and development at Przedsiębiorstwo Budowy Szybów.

The undoubted advantage of flood barriers is the speed of their assembly. Combined with other solutions, they will provide comprehensive protection for buildings, hospitals, schools reducing losses in the event of flooding.
